How to make your pillows last
With proper care, a good quality pillow should last and feel comfortable for many years. In general, feather and down fills will last longer than down-alternative or synthetic fills. If you've found your perfect pillow you want that pillow to last as long as possible.
But pillow care probably isn't at the top of your long list of to-dos. Thankfully, it's easier than you think and proper pillow care will help promote the healthy, high-quality sleep we all need. Below are five tips to keep your pillow in the best possible shape:
Never dry clean or wash your pillow
Every time a pillow is washed the fill inside deteriorates, changing the way it feels. With synthetics and down-alternatives the fill can start to bunch. Pillows with natural fills shouldn’t get wet because mildew could develop, and soap can damage the clusters by stripping them of their natural oils and causing them to break.
Use a pillow pad
You don't wash your mattress because the mattress pad and sheets protect it. A pillow should be treated with the same care and be protected by a pillow pad. A pillow pad sits between your pillow case and pillow and adds a level of protection between the pillow and pillow case. A quality pillow pad will keep the dust mites out of the picture. You should wash your pillow pad when you wash your sheets.
When you make your bed, fluff your pillow to maintain loft and retain resiliency. The only exception to this tip is if you own a memory foam pillow, which cannot be fluffed.
Give your pillow sun to air out
To prevent allergens from building up, give your natural filled pillow a day in the sun every three months, or as you feel necessary. The fresh air and direct sunlight help dry it out and let odors escape.
When pillows are not in use on a bed, store them in a breathable bag. Storing pillows in a plastic bag will trap moisture in with the pillow, causing the pillow to mildew or the fill to deteriorate. NEVER use space bags for pillows, as the pillows will not retain their shape and may mildew over time. Following these simple tips may help you enjoy your favorite pillow longer.
